In the depths of despair, she has no idea who, or where, she is.

Dying of thirst with her ribcage almost poking through her skin, Sandy can barely put one paw in front of the other when she is rescued from the street.

When Sandy’s people parents take her to her beautiful new home on the island, she tries to focus on her future and return the love and kindness showered upon her. Then she meets Lola, Obie and Chip, and the traumatic flashbacks begin. As her past slowly unravels and her memory returns, Sandy must make a choice that will determine her life and her future.

What will she decide?

“I have nothing but the highest of praises to sing for this thought-provoking, tear-jerking tale of torture, death, hope and survival.”

Book 3: People Problems

Original cover of The Island Dog Squad, Book 3: People Problems

This time, it is personal.

Peace and tranquillity are shattered when a fire causes devastation to a rescue centre and its inhabitants. Arson is suspected by those determined to wreak revenge.

A dog squad member is taken in traumatic circumstances and others begin to disappear.

While Ben and Ellie fight for truth and justice alongside Steve and Gina, Sandy and her four-legged pals are caught in the middle and are forced to endure tragedy and heartbreak.

Lola decides the squad will find a way to join their plucky people parents on a joint mission to save the missing dogs and bring the criminals to justice.

Can the men keep the dangerous mission a secret from those they love? Will the dog squad and their new friends survive the wrath of the crazies and their vicious owners? And will those missing ever be reunited with their people parents?

Packed with action, adventure and surprises around every corner, The Island Dog Squad: People Problems will make you laugh, cry and cheer.

“McEwan made her canine heroes almost human: these dogs think, reason, plot and plan. They feel the pain of both their canine and human friends and they share their feelings with their buddies through their barks and actions. Their ‘doggy dialogue’ is as close to human dialogue as it gets and it’s so well done, it’s easy to forget at times that the protagonists of The Island Dog Squad are actually dogs… Clever writing indeed.”

Meet the Island Dog Squad

Every member has a special talent, a distinctive personality and a mission name. Together, they make one unforgettable team.

Lola, mission name Bunty

Lola the pug, squad leader with mission name Bunty

Breed: Pug. Very posh and, in the pug world, a real beauty. Lola is a natural leader. The other dogs listen to her and follow her orders without question. She can be stubborn and has a habit of tapping her front left paw when she is impatient. She also waddles when she walks.

Sandy, mission name Fish

Sandy, a Lab, Husky and Collie cross, mission name Fish

Breed: Lab, Husky and Collie cross. Clever and manipulative, Sandy can be sarcastic and has a knack for reading human emotions and spotting when people are lying. Her sense of smell is exceptional, even by dog standards.

Obie, mission name Digger

Obie, a spaniel cross, mission name Digger

Breed: Spaniel cross. Obie loves digging, and it has got him out of a number of dangerous situations. He is very fast, has a nervous laugh and ends conversations with “ee”. He is also an escape artist, so leave the gate open at your peril!

Chip, mission name Aden

Chip the Border Collie, mission name Aden

Breed: Border Collie. Chip has a high-pitched bark and talks at one hundred miles per hour. He is the fastest member of the squad and is hyperactive. He constantly twists round and round while barking requests. He loves watching sport on television, barking at the balls on the screen and chasing them.

From the author

Sandy’s changed our lives for the better, and this little series is a tribute to her, and to rescue dogs everywhere.

The real Sandy behind the stories

The Island Dog Squad series was inspired by Sandy, our rescue dog. When she first came to live with us, she was nervous and frightened of loud noises and sudden movements. I often wondered what might have happened in her life before she found her way to us. Of course, Sandy couldn’t tell me her story, so my imagination took over. And so the adventures of Sandy, known to her fellow agents by her mission name, Fish, and the Island Dog Squad were born!
